Fire Safety Constructions were appointed for the fire safety upgrade works scheduled to commence in October 2009. The works, valued at $723,000, shall achieve the fire upgrade requirements of Sydney City Council while maintaining the original heritage and art deco features of the building. Design preparation included input from Architectural Heritage Consultants, Rod Howard & Associates.
Upgrade works include new timber framed fire doors, complete re-wiring and relocation of switchboards, new smoke alarm/detection system, hydrant landing values with diesel pump and a smoke exhaust system. Original features such as fittings, wainscoting, tiling and structural glass are being retained. Fire Safety Constructions were selected by competitive tender based on their past experience with fire safety upgrades in heritage sensitive buildings.
The works were staged due to a consultant based electrical design delay and the works are on track for completion in July 2010. Stage 2 works are being managed by Martin + Spork Architects.
